EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia participates in International efforts to save lives in the Central Mediterranean Sea

Thanks to the good weather conditions in the Central Mediterranean Sea, last days have been characterized by a renewed migrants flow from the Libyan coasts.

In order to avoid the further lost of life at sea, also EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia  assets contributed to the international efforts to rescue people in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. 374 migrants have, in fact, been rescued from 4 rubber boats by the German auxiliary ship FGS BERLIN  and the Slovenian corvette SLS TRIGLAV 11 .

After the rescue operation all migrants were transferred to other naval assets operating in the area.

Since the operation launch, last 22ndof June, upon request by the competent Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia assets have been involved in 33 rescue operations saving more than 6800 lives.
