A new life on board the German Auxiliary ship WERRA

On 5 July, the German Auxiliary ship WERRA  had on board 656 souls rescued from different dinghies and handed over from other assets.

Among all these migrants seeking help, one pregnant woman that, yesterday 6 July at 18:32, whist the ship was sailing towards Italy, gave birth to a boy of 2530 grams. The ship’s doctor assisted the woman during the natural childbirth and both mother and child are in good health.

It has been the second birth on board a ship of the German Federal Armed Forces, after Sophia, the child whom the Operation has been named after, born on the German frigate “Schleswig-Holstein” last 24 August 2015.

EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA’s  core mission is to disrupt the business model of human traffickers and smugglers, no less, saving life at sea is both a moral and international law obligation.
