In La Valletta, the Spanish frigate received during the weekend the Spanish Defence attaché to Rome

Last Sunday evening, the Spanish frigate Navarra received the visit of several military authorities at “la Valletta” harbour (Malta). The Spanish Defence Attaché from Rome headed the delegation, and other authorities accompanied him from Germany, Canada, United States, France, Italy and several representatives of Malta’s armed forces.

The authorities, received by the Commanding Officer of the Spanish vessel, headed towards the Officers wardroom and received an explanation of the Spanish frigate capacities, and a presentation of the mission that it develops in EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA on its fight against the illegal human traffic routes that exist in the central part of the Mediterranean sea.

EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA’s core mission is to disrupt the business model of human traffickers and smugglers, no less, saving life at sea is both a moral and international law obligation. Thus far, in fact, following EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia’s activities, 101-suspected smugglers and traffickers have been prosecuted by the Italian authorities and 359 boats have been prevented from being re-used by smugglers.
